A state pilot program hopes to create more affordable housing by matching seniors who have a room to rent with an adult looking for a place to live.
The Minnesota Nice HomeShare Program was part of the omnibus housing bill signed into law by the governor on May 19. The $150,000 pilot program covers three counties: Lake, St. Louis and Washington.
“This is like a win-win,” Sen. Karin Housley, R-Stillwater, said in an online video about the program. “This person gets financial help to pay for their mortgage or extra bills, and the person looking for affordable housing could find a room in a home with another senior.”
She added during a committee hearing: “Studies show that social interactions help aging seniors remain in their homes longer with conversation and meaningful interactions.”
At the same hearing, Sen. Lindsey Port, DFL-Burnsville, agreed the program could fill a need.
“I’m really interested to see how this works out,” Port said. “It seems like a great idea.”
The Minnesota Housing Finance Agency is authorized to establish the program and will coordinate with Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging and AARP Minnesota.
An online platform is expected to match seniors based on needs and preferences, as well as provide background checks and income verification. The platform could also offer secure rent processing and rental agreement templates.
Housley said she is hopeful the pilot program will demonstrate its value so funding can be secured to expand it statewide. Thirty-two other states offer similar housing programs.
