Representative Shelley Buck (47A) spoke on Saturday at the No Kings rally in St. Paul on the steps of the Minnesota State Capitol.
Wearing traditional clothing and accessories reflecting her Dakota heritage, she reminded the crowd that the land they stood on was the home of indigenous people.
Buck spoke in both English and Dakota as she welcomed a crowd estimated over 100,000 as well as an online audience.
A section of Buck’s speech was posted on Minnesota House DFL’s Instagram.
The flagship rally received extra attention outside of the over 3,000 that took place nationwide with special guests U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and singers Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez and Maggie Rogers. Each took their time to commend the response of the people of Minnesota to the recent surge of ICE forces
Many Minnesota leaders spoke including Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Governor Tim Walz who introduced Springsteen singing, “Streets of Minneapolis.”
Buck and Representative Leigh Finke (Falcon Heights) were the only members of the legislature who spoke.
