Sen. Nicole Mitchell, DFL-Woodbury, announced on social media today that she has resigned her Senate seat.
She expressed her gratitude to family, friends, and constituents “who shared with me the issues they care about and trusted me to work on their behalf.”
A Becker County jury last week found Mitchell guilty on a felony count of burglary and a felony count of possession of burglary tools. She broke into her stepmother’s house in Detroit Lakes in April 2024. She said during her trial she was checking on her stepmother who has Alzheimer’s disease but told police at the scene she was there to gather a few items of her late father’s.
She will be sentenced on Sept. 10. Monday, her attorneys said Mitchell would resign by Aug. 4.
Mitchell has represented Senate District 47 since 2022. “It has been a true honor to serve the state of Minnesota and the community I grew up in,” she said.
The two DFL state representatives whose House districts make up Senate District 47 – Rep. Ethan Cha and Rep. Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger – have announced their intentions to run for the open seat.
It’s up to Gov. Tim Walz to set the dates for the special election that will include a primary. Democrats now hold a 33-32 edge in the chamber.
