Twenty Woodbury high school students have been named semifinalists for about $26 million in National Merit Scholarships to be awarded this spring.
The students are:
- From East Ridge High School: Angie Huang, Jorapurkar Ketaki, Daniel Song, and Venkat Anuraa.
- From Home School or Online School: Ailin Tse.
- From Math & Science Academy: Obed T. Bruce, William A. Coulter, Ian J. Jin, Bhavya K. Kodali, Prisha Rathore, and Grant H. Zeng.
- From Woodbury High School: Lucas Burton, Eowyn Jenkins, Ethan Lu, Corrina Mattison, Amishi Medicherla, Iris Meyer, Ryan Niu, Ivanka Sonkusare, and Alexander Wang.
Names of all semifinalists nationwide were announced Sept. 10 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, based in Evanston, IL.
The students are among the top one percent of high school seniors nationwide, earning their distinction through outstanding performance on the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
That test was taken by about 1.3 million US high-school juniors across the country, the NMSC said.
About 16,000 semifinalists were chosen this year, according to the NMSC. About 15,000 of them are expected to be named finalists, which are typically announced in February.
About 6,900 National Merit Scholarship winners are expected to be named later next year based on a variety of factors, including their demonstrated skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
