Woodbury High School alum Max Meyer earned his first MLB All-Star selection on Saturday after emerging as one of the National League’s top starting pitchers for the Miami Marlins this season.
Although Meyer was selected to the National League roster, he will not pitch in the July 14 All-Star Game at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park because he is scheduled to start the Sunday before the break, a scheduling rule designed to keep pitchers on their regular rotation.
The 27-year-old right-hander has emerged as the Marlins’ ace this year, posting a 9-1 record — triple his win total from the previous season — with a 2.58 ERA, 1.11 WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched) and 116 strikeouts in 108 innings through his first 19 starts.
Meyer’s selection marks a significant milestone in a career that has included multiple setbacks. Since being selected third overall by Miami in the 2020 MLB Draft, the former Woodbury Royals standout battled injuries, including undergoing Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season before working his way back to the major leagues.
“It’s special,” Meyer said. “Looking back at my career, lot of injuries. I’m glad that it doesn’t really feel like a personal award because I have so many staff members pulling for me.”
