WOODBURY, MN (WNN) – A man wanted on felony charges led police in Woodbury on a high-speed chase this afternoon. At one point, he drove onto soccer fields where games were being played.
“It was terrifying,” one witness said. The suspect was eventually arrested in Minneapolis. No injuries to the public were reported.
The Woodbury Public Safety Department said the chase began about 1:29 p.m. after police were alerted to a vehicle whose owner had outstanding warrants. Witnesses saw about 10 police cars in pursuit on Radio Drive near the soccer fields. One witness said police tried a precision immobilization technique maneuver but that failed to stop the suspect, who then drove on the soccer fields to elude authorities.
“Officers pursued the vehicle in order to apprehend this dangerous suspect,” police commander Tom Ehrenberg said in a statement. “The pursuit was continuously evaluated by officers as the event rapidly unfolded.”
The driver crashed his vehicle when he entered Minneapolis on I-94. He then unsuccessfully tried to carjack another vehicle before being taken into custody.
The 45-year-old driver was arrested for felony threats of violence, felony fourth-degree assault, two charges of felony fleeing in a motor vehicle, and felony obstruction. The suspect was taken to Regions Hospital for evaluation and then will be taken to Washington County Jail.
