State Rep. Amanda Hemminsen-Jaeger Tuesday won the DFL Party’s endorsement for the Senate seat open after the resignation of Nicole Mitchell.
At a DFL Senate District 47 delegate meeting, 35 delegates voted for Hemmingsen-Jaeger, thirteen voted for state Rep. Ethan Cha, and three people made no endorsement.
Cha and Hemminsen-Jaeger represent the House districts that make up the Senate district, which includes Woodbury. They will face each other in the primary election Aug. 26.
Before voting started both candidates appeared on the stage with their supporters. Both gave a short speech and there was a 30-minute session of questions and answers.
The first questioner asked both candidates if they would withdraw if they lost the endorsement today. Hemmingsen-Jaeger said she would withdraw, while Cha said that he would still run without the DFL endorsement.
When asked about their priorities if endorsed, Hemmingsen-Jaeger said that she would focus on the health of the community. “We have to protect everything: sick and safe times, women’s right to choose, listen to all of our community and learn how we can advocate for everybody across state governments,” she said.
Cha stated that one of his first priorities would be to win and keep a seat majority for the Democrats.
Republican Dwight Dorau is the only Republican candidate to announce his candidacy for the seat.
Mitchell resigned following her conviction on one count of felony burglary and one count of felony possession of burglary tools after being arrested inside her stepmother’s house in April 2024.
