A focal point in Woodbury will reopen to the public Oct. 1. Central Park is undergoing a major renovation, including a replacement of its popular Lookout Ridge Indoor Playground and the addition of needed meeting space. A grand reopening celebration is planned for Nov. 2.
“We’re excited to welcome the community back,” said Parks and Recreation Director Michelle Okada said in a city news release. “These improvements help ensure Central Park remains a vibrant and welcoming space for decades to come.”
Construction began in March 2024, closing the park area, indoor playground, Washington County offices, school district spaces, walkways to Stonecrest Senior Living and the YMCA, and displacing the farmers market. The county’s RH Stafford Library has remained open.
The remodeled facility will address a community need by creating a 12,500 square-foot multi-purpose space for up to 350 people. When complete the project will have enclosed the amphitheater, increased parking and pedestrian access, increased lighting, addressed deferred maintenance, and upgraded accessibility. Geothermal and solar systems, and other sustainability features, will improve energy efficiency.
More artwork will be rotated throughout the building, while the greenery and water features will be maintained.
The playground is being replaced with one that includes 75 features aimed at children ages 12 and under. According to city council documents, feedback from the community was incorporated into the new design. The tall, enclosed slide, as well as a multi-lane slide and the dedicated toddler area, will return.
In addition to the playground, two private birthday party rooms – Owl’s Den and Peak’s Nest – will open in October. The city says interest in reserving birthday-party and play packages is strong. Reservations are being taken for parties in October. The facility also has spaces available to rent for a wedding or corporate meeting.
The Woodbury City Council asked city staff to evaluate the facility in 2014. That prompted user surveys, outreach for ideas on renovation plans, and a market survey, as well as city council workshops. The council approved the $41 million contract for construction in January 2024. It’s the first substantial renovation since Central Park opened in 2002.
Mayor Anne Burt pointed out the population of Woodbury has doubled in that time.
During the grand reopening in November, free access will be provided to Lookout Ridge and tours of the new space will be offered.
