Gov. Tim Walz today set the special election dates to fill the open Senate District 47 seat following the resignation of Nicole Mitchell. The district includes Woodbury and part of Maplewood.
The District 47 primary election is scheduled for Aug. 26, while the general election will take place Nov. 4. The same dates will apply to the special election to fill a Senate District 29 vacancy that opened after the death of Republican Sen. Bruce Anderson.
A primary is expected in Senate District 47 since two DFLers have said they will run for the seat. They are Rep. Ethan Cha and Rep. Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger, the two state representatives whose House districts comprise Senate District 47. No Republicans have announced yet.
Candidates can file for the seat with the Secretary of State or the county auditors of Ramsey or Washington Counties beginning Wednesday, July 30, and continuing until Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Mitchell resigned last week after being found guilty by a Becker County jury of one felony count of burglary and one felony county of possession of burglary tools. She admitted she broke into her stepmother’s house in April of 2024 but testified at her trial she did so to check on her stepmother’s health. She told police on the scene she was there to gather some things of her late father’s.
Democrats control the Senate by a 33-32 margin so the special elections will determine which party controls the body.
