WOODURY, MN (WNN) – Jill Sobule, singer of 1995 hit tracks “I Kissed a Girl” and “Supermodel,” was identified by her publicist as the victim of a house fire in Woodbury.
The 66-year-old Denver-born musician’s song “I Kissed a Girl,” off of her 1995 self-titled album,
became the first openly LGBTQ-themed song to chart on the Billboard Top 20.
She is perhaps best known for her single “Supermodel,” also off her self-titled album, which
was her second. “Supermodel” was prominently featured in the popular 1995 movie “Clueless,”
helping Sobule break through to the mainstream.
John Porter, Sobule’s manager, said in a statement that Sobule was “a force of nature and human
rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture” and that he hopes her “music, memory,
and legacy continue to live on and inspire others.”
The Woodbury Public Safety Department says the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:30 a.m. The home is at the intersection of Pinehurst Road and Duckwood Trail near Interlachen Parkway.
The fire crew was told that a woman in her 60s was possibly still inside. While firefighters began fighting the blaze, other members of the Woodbury Fire Department began searching for the woman in the burning house. Unfortunately, she died before she could be rescued.
Fire chief Chris Klein said that through mutual assistance agreements the Woodbury Public Safety Department was assisted by firefighters from Cottage Grove, Lake Elmo, Oakdale, Newport, Saint Paul Park, and Maplewood as well as an ambulance from Lakeview. Neighbors counted 15 fire trucks.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
