WOODBURY, MN (WNN) – Young women from Woodbury area schools have been selected for Athena Awards for their excellence and achievements as student-athletes.
The St. Paul Area Athena Awards program honors outstanding female high school senior student-athletes from St. Paul, suburban public schools, and independent high schools for their athletic achievements. The award is based on excellence in individual sports or for participation and accomplishments in team sports. It’s named after Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare and handicrafts.
Elle Wildman, a soccer and basketball player from East Ridge High School, has won three All Conference Awards, one All Conference Honorable Mention, three All-State awards and was Team MVP three times in soccer. In basketball, she received two All Conference Honorable Mentions and Defensive Player of the Year.
Amelia Applebee from the Math and Science Academy has won awards in cross country, Nordic skiing, and track and field. She was named All Conference twice in both cross country and track and field while also captaining all three teams.
Makenna Lily from New Life Academy won two All Conference Awards in Volleyball and also received an All State Award. She captained the track and field team for two years.
Josie Leonard, from Park High School, has won several awards for soccer and hockey. Notably, she won one All Conference Honorable Mention for both sports. She has also received three All Conference Awards in lacrosse.
Liberty Quast from Stillwater Area High School has won multiple awards in gymnastics and track and field. In gymnastics she garnered four All Conference Awards, four All Section Awards, 11 All State Awards, and eight All State Honorable Mentions. In track and field she collected 10 All Conference Awards and five State medals. She also served as team captain in both sports.
Greta Culshaw-Klein captained the hockey, soccer,and lacrosse teams at Tartan High School. She won All Conference Honorable Mention in hockey, two All Conference and one Honorable Mention in Soccer, and both an All Conference Award and an Honorable Mention in track and field.
Sarah Vaske of Woodbury High School has won several awards including three All Conference Awards for cross country and five All Conference Awards in track And field. She was also the team captain for basketball and won awards in that sport.
The award winners have also been part of other extra curricular activities in their schools and the community and have GPAs of 3.5 or higher.
The awards ceremony will take place on April 16 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre.
