WOODBURY, MN (WNN) – Dry conditions that could spark wildfires have prompted the state to restrict the open burning of vegetative debris in Washington County. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it won’t issue permits for open burning of brush or yard waste while the restriction is in place.
“Wildfire danger is especially high in spring because dormant or dead vegetation from the previous year has dried out and there is no snow protection,” Karen Harrison, DNR wildfire prevention specialist, said in a news release. “Even after precipitation, fine fuels, such as grass and small twigs, can dry out quickly from wind or low relative humidity, making them easy fuel for a wildfire.”
In addition to Washington County, the restrictions apply in the following counties: Anoka, Benton, Chisago, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Pine, Ramsey, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, and Wright.
Residents are encouraged to compost or chip yard waste or take brush to a collection site instead of burning it. Washington County yard waste disposal sites are listed here.
The DNR points out that people start more than 90% of wildfires in Minnesota, and anyone who sets a fire can be held liable for damage caused as well as fire suppression costs. For updates on burning restrictions click here.
