The 16-year-old who fell through thin ice on Markgrafs Lake in Woodbury died yesterday at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center – East Bank, according to a news release from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Yahye Abdi was under the ice for about 90 minutes Monday before emergency responders were able to find him and rescue him.
Abdi was remembered as “a bright, kind, and thoughtful young man who touched the hearts of everyone he met” in a GoFundMe post. The fund will cover funeral costs as well as supporting causes that were important to Abdi like building a well to supply clean water to a community in need.
Abdi was a student at Stillwater Area High School. “Yayhe was a remarkable soul, beloved by his peers and elders for his warmth, intelligence, and compassion,” the post states. “He will forever be missed but never forgotten.”
A 12-year-old girl who also fell through the ice on the lake was rescued faster because she was still above water when responders arrived. The girl did not sustain major injuries.
