The first national observance of what we now know as Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868.
It was proclaimed as “Decoration Day” by Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who died in the American Civil War.
Later, after World War I, the holiday was expanded to honor Americans who have died in all wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday and moved to the last Monday in May.
