WOODBURY, MN (WNN) – Flag football is the nation’s fastest-growing emerging high school sport. Minnesota is not one of the 14 states offering flag football as a sanctioned sport but the Minnesota Vikings are sponsoring a league with 51 teams and last week high school girls from Woodbury played their first games.
Both Woodbury and Tartan High Schools sent 5-on-5 teams onto the gridiron.
Woodbury lost to Park 25-18 with their next game scheduled against South Saint Paul on Sunday May 4 at 4 p.m. on the field at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights.
Tartan played two games and split; beating North Saint Paul 40-19 and losing to Mahtomedi 14-45. The girls will square up for two more home games on Sunday May 4. They will face Roseville at 4 p.m. and have a chance to even things up with Mahtomedi at 5 p.m.
Woodbury is offering a farm system with co-ed flag football for first to eighth graders. The Woodbury Athletic Association teams just wrapped up a sold-out season of 6-on-6 ball.
