Pete Winslow
WOODBURY, MN (WNN) – Pete Winslow from Woodbury was named to the US National Power soccer team.
Power soccer is a sport developed specifically for power wheelchair users.
The co-ed athletes can qualify for the sport with a number of conditions including muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy.
Winslow, a congenital amputee and graduate of Stillwater High School, was first introduced to power soccer when he was 13 years old. Winslow says his life has “never been the same” since being introduced to the sport.
Winslow said many members of the team need help in their daily lives, but on the court, they’re unstoppable. He says the people selected to these teams are considered to be the elite athletes of their sports – just like any other elite squad.
The team is playing in an invitational March 19 – 23 in Fayetteville, Ga.
It’s the first outing of the year for the squad that will compete in a November tournament called the Federation Internationale de Powerchair Football Association (FIPFA) Copa America. The competition will serve as the region’s qualifying tournament for next year’s FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup in Argentina.
Winslow has competed in previous competitions with his parents Herb and Carolyn cheering at many of the games.
